Alabama
Gold was established
in December of 2008
By Mitchell Baldwin and Tyrone
Silmon as an AAU affiliate organization. Alabama Gold is recognized
as a tax-exempt organization. The purpose of the organization is
help youth of Metro Birmingham, AL to become better men and basketball
players.
Mitchell, founder
of the CHAMP organization, assisted inner city kids for more than
20 years. He was tremendously successful in directing kids to become
productive citizens. He worked tirelessly and achieved many honors
for his work and has been received very well by the educational
and corporate community. Tyrone, was one of the top CHAMP volunteers
and earned the respect of the students and volunteers. Tyrone brings
a wealth of experience in the basketball arena, namely playing Professional
basketball in Europe and teaching in the Birmingham City Schools
system. These two gentlemen coupled together brings about a winning
combination. These gentlemen are back mentoring by leading our young
men in the positive direction we need them to travel. They relate
to the youth.
The Alabama
Gold was organized for the purpose of developing middle school and
senior high school role models utilizing sports, principally basketball,
as the vehicle to attract and intermingle potential leaders. While
many middle school students have the opportunity to play sports
in their schools, there is no program or opportunity for inner city
student athletes and suburban student athletes to interrelate on
a continuous basis. The benefits are extraordinary. Not only does
the suburban youth learn about inner city culture, inner city youths
have the opportunity to interact with suburban youths, their friends
and their families, also travel to places which they otherwise would
be unable to visit.
In addition
to athletics, transcripts have been requested and soon will be required
before one is able to participate in Alabama Gold programs. Counseling
is given as to what the requirements are for staying eligible to
play athletics. Additionally, for those who need help in various
subjects, efforts are being made to locate volunteer tutors.
Participants
in Alabama Gold programs are charged with the responsibility of
being examples in their community and are encouraged to be leaders
in their respective schools. They are also cautioned that if they
do not work toward being an exemplary person, they may not be able
to participate in the program in the future.
Grades will
be checked to see if student athletes are academically eligible
from their respective schools.
